The Playbook introduces our first ever NFL Power Rankings.

Each week, teams will be ranked 1-32 based on season performance. The rankings essentially show who would win on a neutral field given normal conditions. That is, the number 1 team would be favored to win over the remaining 31 on a neutral field. The 31st ranked team would only be favored against the 32nd ranked team. Calculating power ranking is a difficult art. Scroll to the bottom to discover how we’ve calculated ours.*

Our list will be released every Wednesday before the NFL week begins with highlights on the biggest movers each week

*How are The Playbook Power Rankings calculated?

The Playbook has taken advantage of the vast amount of official NFL data available to source our Power Ranking. For any data enthusiasts out there, we’ve used a Pythagorean Expected Wins (PEW) formula as the basis of our calculations.

Beyond the PEW, The Playbook analyzes offensive and defensive performance at a play level, strength of schedule, injuries and other data points to create a proprietary analysis of each team.

Consistency is key. A shock win from a low ranked team might shoot them up the rankings one week, but other characteristics (roster strength, schedule difficulty e.g.) mean that a defeat the following week will see them drop a similar number of places.
