Nacional win top two battle

Nacional won the battle of the top two in Group B as they defeated ten-man River Plate 2-0 at the Saroldi Stadium. The win meant Nacional leapt above their rivals in the group.

The match

Diego Vicente was sent off for a dangerous lunge in the 39th minute. Seven minutes after half time, Gonzalo Bergessio gave the visitors the lead after an excellent team move.

Substitute Santiago Rodriguez played a through ball for Ayrton Cougo to run onto and he played a ball across the area for the striker to guide into the far corner. It was Bergessio’s 15th goal in the league this season (including Apertura matches).

River Plate then were awarded a penalty for handball by Paulo Vinicius, but Matias Alonso hit the top of the crossbar from the spot.

Nacional secured the three points after an excellent one-two between Rodrigo Amaral and Santiago Rodriguez that put the latter through on goal, and he finished past the goalkeeper.

Other results

Elsewhere in Group B, Fenix beat Peñarol 1-0 to condemn the visitors to their third defeat in four games.

In Group A, Liverpool drew 2-2 with Torque while Wanderers beat Cerro Largo 1-0. Only two points separate the top four teams.
