Sharjah FC were crowned champions of the UAE super cup after securing a 1-0 victory against league rivals Al Ain at the Al Maktoum Stadium.

In a tightly fought contest, Sharjah took the lead within 29 minutes following an own goal from Laba Kodjo, who inadvertently turned Caio Lucas’ header from a corner kick into his own net.

Both teams came close to scoring on a few occasions, but did not have the required quality for the crucial final touch.

Sharjah lost former AS Roma centre back, Kostas Manolas to a groin injury after just 10 minutes and was replaced by Gustavo Alemoa.

With Sharjah leading at half-time, both teams started the second half brightly. Laba Kodjo had a couple of chances in the second half, but could not find a route past the formidable Sharjah FC goalkeeper, Adel Alhosani, who produced some outstanding saves on the night. His performance rightfully was noted with the Man of the Match prize.

This was Sharjah FCā€™s second Super Cup title, having previously won the competition in 1995. The UAE Super Cup is held every year between the league champions from the previous season, in this case, Al Ain, and the President Cup Winners, which were Sharjah.

Both teams will now turn their attention to league proceedings. Al Ain are currently third, while Sharjah sit in fourth place. They are equally matched with the same points, only two behind league leaders Shabab Al-Ahli, and will both have their sights set on claiming first place in the league.
