La Rioja keep top four hopes alive

BM Ciudad de Logroño (La Rioja ) beat Incarlopsa Cuenca 38-31 to move up to fourth in the table and keep their European hopes alive.

The match

It was overall a comfortable win for La Rioja, who won the first set 19-14 and then closed it out with a 19-17 second set win.

In the first set, the scores were tied at 11-11 but La Rioja then won eight of the next 11 points to take the set.

Eduardo Cadarso Caballero and Mario Dorado Pérez both scored nine points for the hosts.

What does it mean?

They have 41 points after their 20th win of the season, however Granollers are in fifth with the same amount of points and have two games in hand.

La Rioja face relegation-threatened Puerto Sagunto at the weekend, before meeting Granollers in a vital clash.

Cuenca are seventh with 37 points and have lost their last two games.

All-square in relegation battle

At the bottom, Morrazo Cangas moved out of the bottom four with a 24-24 draw against Puerto Sagunto. It was a match that both sides needed to win, but in a tense and attritional affair, they picked up a point each.

It was Cangas’ second successive draw in the league which will give them some confidence, however they are without a win in four.

Quabit Guadalajara are a point behind Morrazo Cangas and have a game in hand, but the two sides will meet in nine days time.

Puerto Sagunto will rue not winning as they are without a win in nine games and are three points from safety having played a game more.
