That point at Newcastle might just come back to save Dean Smith’s @LCFC today. But they’ll need all three points against West Ham, and a favour from Bournemouth.

River Plate lose on opening day

36-time champions River Plate were beaten 3-1 by Banfield in their opening game of the Argentina Premier League.

The hosts made the perfect start when Rafael Santos Borré headed home after six minutes, but the visitors responded with two headed goals of their own in the first half from Agustin Fontana and Giuliano Galoppo.

Javier Pinola scored an own-goal just after the hour mark to condemn Marcelo Gallardo’s side to defeat despite having 70% of the ball.

Boca Juniors start with a win

Meanwhile, rivals Boca Juniors made a positive start to their season, winning 2-1 away at Lanus.

Former Premier League striker Carlos Tevez opened the scoring for the champions but Lanus equalised in the 34th minute through José Sand. Ramón Ábila scored the winning goal for the visitors in the 54th minute.

Other results

Independiente edged past Cordoba 1-0 with an own-goal from Claudio Riaño enough for the away side to take all three points- despite only having one shot on target in the game.

Elsewhere, there were 0-0 draws between Aldosivi and Estudiantes and Unión and Arsenal Sarandi.
