Milan stay top despite defeat

AC Milan remain top of Serie A despite suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat at home to Atalanta at the weekend.

The visitors continued their great form in the league as they won comfortably at the San Siro.

The match

They took the lead through a header by Cristian Romero in the 26th minute. His diving header from a Robin Gosens cross squeezed past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donarumma.

Eight minutes into the second half, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men doubled their lead when Josip Ilicic converted from the spot after Franck Kessie brought the Atalanta forward down in the box.

Atalanta had further chances to kill the game and eventually did when Duvan Zapata slotted past Donarumma with 13 minutes to go.

Milan had their first shot on target in the 77th minute when substitute and debutant Mario Mandzukic was denied by Pierluigi Gollini.

What it means

Atalanta have not lost in Serie A since November 28th, a run of 10 league games. They are up to fifth, seven points off the top. Milan top the table at the halfway stage with a two-point lead despite their second defeat of the season.
