Essen win comfortably

RW Esssen bounced back from their 0-0 draw with SC Wiedenbrueck with a comfortable 2-0 win against bottom side Bonner SC.

Simon Engelmann scored twice to give the league leaders their 10th home win of the season from 11 games. The other game ended in a draw.

The match

He scored his 18th goal of the Regionalliga season from the spot after Marco Kehl-Gomez’s free kick struck a hand in the penalty area.

Essen dominated the match, creating a host of chances and Engelmann netted his 19th goal of the season in the 76th minute.

He rounded the keeper after a through ball and finished from a tight angle.

What it means

Essen move to 54 points from 22 games, a lead of four points ahead of Borussia Dortmund II. Bonner remain at the bottom of the table after their fourth consecutive defeat.

Dortmund II also win

Borussia Dortmund II continued their excellent away form as they beat FC Köln II 3-0.

Captain Steffen Tigges, who featured for the senior side in their 4-2 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday night, scored twice for the reserves either side of half time.

His first goal was a towering header from an in-swinging corner in the 31st minute. Ansgar Knauff added a second with a cool finish after the ball rebounded into his path.

Tigges tapped in to score his 14th goal in 19 games with 12 minutes remaining.

What it means

The win was Dortmund II’s eighth away win from nine with the other ending as a draw. They are four points behind Essen with a game in hand which is against Gladbach II’s on Wednesday afternoon.

Köln lie eighth with 31 points but have two games in hand on some of their rivals. They face Bonner on Wednesday.
