Both Boca and River failed to bounce back from being dumped out of the Copa Libertadores, with yet more losses in Fecha 7 of the Liga Profesional. Carlos Tevez got his first win as manager of Rosario Central, Newell’s Old Boys remain top of the league and Racing beat Independiente in the Avellaneda derby.

Here’s our round-up of the last week of Argentinian football action.

Boca lose again

After being knocked out of the Copa Libertadores by Corinthians on penalties, Boca Juniors sacked Sebastian Battaglia and replaced him with reserve team coach Hugo Ibarra. However, their poor form continued as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of San Lorenzo.

The game actually started well for Boca as they took the lead in the 28th minute when Sebastian Villa’s free-kick was headed in by Marcos Rojo.

Things soon to a turn for the worse for Ibarra’s side as Agustin Giay levelled the score in the 38th minute.

Nicolas Fernandez Mercau thought he had given San Lorenzo the lead just before half-time but his strike was ruled out by VAR for a foul in the build-up.

Santo soon took the lead in the second half when Ezequiel Cerutti’s lobbed cross was headed in by Adam Bareiro, who later missed a penalty and the chance to extend the lead.

However, his side still held on to the victory, condemning Los Xeneizes to three consecutive defeats in the Liga Profesional.

Despite the result, Boca had 70% possession. But they lacked any clinical edge, as San Lorenzo had 7 shots on target while Ibarra’s side had just 2.

River also suffer defeat

River Plate lost 1-0 on aggregate to Velez Sarsfield in the Libertadores and their bad form continued as they suffered a defeat to Godoy Cruz in the Liga.

Godoy Cruz took the lead in the 22nd minute as Gonzalo Abrego played in Martin Ojeda who fired into the net. The goal was initially ruled out for offside by the linesman but VAR awarded the goal.

Just two minutes after they took the lead, Ojeda then turned provider when he crossed the ball in for Abrego to score.

Just before half-time, Godoy Cruz were reduced to ten men when Gianluca Ferrari was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Despite the extra man, River could not get back into the game and went a player down themselves when Rodrigo Aliendro was shown a straight red in the 90th minute.

The match finished 2-0 to Godoy Cruz and they had their goalkeeper Diego Rodríguez to thank for making remarkable saves from a Lucas Beltrán header and a strike from range of Paulo Díaz.

Especially with playing much of the game with a player advantage Marcelo Gallardo’s side should have done better with their 70% possession. They had their chances with 8 shots on target but without Julian Alvarez – who has now joined up with Manchester City – they lacked their clinical edge.

Tevez gets first win

After two successive defeats, Carlos Tevez won his first game as a manager as his Rosario Central side beat Sarmiento 1-0.

Franco Quinteros was sent off in the 30th minute which reduced Sarmiento to 10 men. Rosario made the most of their advantage and their winner came as Walter Montoya’s cross was headed in by Franco Quinteros in the 76th minute.

Tevez’s side were well-deserved winners, with 72% possession and 23 shots compared to Sarmiento’s 6.

Newell’s remain top

As Gimnasia lost 2-0 to Atletico Tucuman, Newell’s draw with Platense puts them top of the division with 15 points.

Newell’s had led  from the 41st minute as Marcos Ledesma failed to control a Juan Pablo Pignani pass back and the ball deflected into his own net.

However, Platense rescued a point in the 82nd minute when Juan Esquivel volleyed into the top corner from outside the box.

A draw was a fair result as Newell’s just had more possession with 52%, while Platense edged with total shots, 12 to Newell’s 9.

Newell’s face a tough game on Saturday as they take on Racing who are now up to 4th in the league, just two points behind La Lepra after Fernando Gago’s side beat Independiente in the Avellaneda derby. Gabriel Hauche scored a spectacular overhead kick to win the game for La Academia.
