The match

The visitors fell behind in the 15th minute to a wonderful free kick from Ba-Muaka Simakala that gave RW Essen goalkeeper Daniel Davari no chance.

It was the German’s 12th goal of the season. He nearly grabbed another when he turned smartly in the box but his shot went just wide of the far post.

RW Essen levelled just after the hour mark when Amara Conde’s free kick was met by a ferocious header from Daniel Heber beating Fynn Arkenberg to the ball.

Heber missed an easier chance to win the game in the final stages but his diving header looped over the bar.

What it means

The hosts recorded their fourth draw from their last six games, while RW Essen’s stuttering 2021 continues.

Lippstadt score late equaliser

Elsewhere, Lippstadt salvaged a point as they equalised in stoppage time to draw 1-1 against Fortuna Dusseldorf II.

Substitute Vincent Schaub put Dusseldorf ahead in the 74th minute with a curling strike but Jan-Lukas Liehr scored with a low strike in the 91st minute to rescue a point for Lippstadt.

Felix Bechtold’s side have managed back-to-back draws and are three points off safety. The hosts remain fifth.
