Freiburg promoted

Freiburg II have been crowned champions of the Regionalliga Südwest with a game to spare after they drew 1-1 against secured the point they needed against nearest rivals Elversberg.

Christian Preuser’s side have therefore assembled an unassailable five-point lead and cannot be caught at the top of the league.

Preuser will leave on a high as he departs to manage Fortuna Dusseldorf next season. He spoke with pride after achieving promotion.

He said: ”We simply deserve it because we played an outstanding season and have a great and very talented team that can now compete on an even higher level next season. For me personally, it was a perfect conclusion to my five years in charge.”

The match

Freiburg had to come from behind as the hosts took the lead in the 18th minute when striker Kevin Koffi was fouled in the penalty area by Sandrino Braun-Schumacher. Israel Suero Fernandez’s penalty was almost saved by Noah Atubolu but the ball trickled over the line.

The visitors reacted well and had opportunities to equalise. Emilio Kehrer went close while Eros Dacaj also could have levelled.

11 minutes into the second half, Freiburg’s pressure told as Carlo Boukhalfa slotted home from close range. As they just needed a point to guarantee promotion and Elversberg had to win, the side in second threw everything at Freiburg in the closing stages. Atubolu was excellent as he made a few stops to deny Elversberg and secure the point needed for his side.

As the final whistle blew, the players celebrated in unison and put on t-shirts with the words ”The best in the southwest” emblazoned on them.
