Puntarenas leave it late again

Rachit Gomez Tabash scored a dramatic 89th minute winner as Puntarenas rose to the top of the Liga de Ascenso Group A table with a 1-0 win over AD Santa Rosa.

It comes after the visitors won in similar fashion last week with a late winner.

Their spirit and never-say-die attitude under manager Roberto Wong saw them go top of the table after previous leaders Guanacasteca were beaten 1-0 by Municipal Garabito. Raul Vidal scored the only goal of the game.

What it means

Puntarenas lead the group with nine points after their third straight away win, while Guanacasteca are two points behind in second.

Municipal Garabito sit third, only trailing Guanacasteca on goal difference.

Carmelita bounce back with comeback win

In Group B, Deportiva Carmelita recovered from a 6-2 hammering last weekend to beat Santa Ana 3-2 and head the table.

They fell behind after four minutes to a Vilson Aparicido goal, but goals from Froylan Alfaro, Morera Pablo and Endrik Alvarado turned the game on its head. Carlos Quiros pulled one back, but the hosts held on to record an important three points.

AD Cofutpa, who scored six last weekend against Deportiva Carmelita, also won 2-0 against Cariari to go second in the table. Berny Solorzano scored a brace to become the top-scorer in the Clausura with five.

What it means

It was Carmelita’s third win from four games, and means they go top – albeit Municipal San Ramon have a game in hand and will go top if they win. Cofutpa are two points off the top.

Cardenas scores winner again

Steven Cardenas scored a 96th minute winner as Barrio Mexico made it three wins from four games with a 2-1 win over Puerto Golfito.

Despite conceding in all of their group games, Barrio Mexico once again demonstrated enormous character to battle back from a goal down.

Jefferson Venegas opened the scoring for Puerto Golfito in the 28th minute, before Fabrizio Ronchetti equalised in the 39th minute.

Cardenas came up with the winner last week in a 2-1 win, and he did so again with an even later goal.

What it means

Futbol Consultants, who lost last week to Barrio Mexico, beat CS Uruguay 2-0 to remain three points behind the leaders.
