El Vigía start the season with a win

Atlético El Vigía began the new season with a win, beating Universidad  de Los Andes FC 2-0 in the opening game of the Venezuelan second division.

The rest of the opening gameweek matches will be played on Saturday.

The renamed Liga FUTVE2 regular season will run from July to October.

Teams were geographically divided into Grupo Occidental (10 teams) and Grupo Oriental (8 teams). The four teams with the highest points in each group will advance to the end of the season play-offs and fight for promotion.

The match

El Vigía dominated the match from the beginning and took just three minutes to score the opening goal of the FUTVE 2 season when César Cedeño found the net.

Jerry Flores then doubled the hosts’ lead with with an incredible shot from distance.

ULA FC responded well in the second half but El Vigía saw the game out with some ease to win the first local derby of the season.

“El Ballet Azul” returns

The return of Minerven de El Callao is the big story of the opening weekend. The club have been in the wilderness after being a force in the nineties where they reached the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores. They face Angostura FC in an eagerly anticipated game.

But last season’s promotion season has put them back in the limelight and there is a lot of optimism that they can get back up to the Primera Division.

The matches

These are the upcoming matches for this weekend:

Rayo Zuliano – Yaracuy FC

Angostura – Minerven

Academia Rey – Llaneros EF

Petare- Dynamo

Academia AIFI- Bolívar FC

Ureña- Real Frontera

TFC – JBL Zulia

Libertador – Atl. La Cruz
