Torque hit Wanderers for eight

In an extraordinary match at the Alfredo Victor Viera Stadium, Torque pummelled and embarrassed Wanderers 8-2 in the Uruguayan Primera Division, scoring six times in the second half.

Wanderers, who lost the Intermediate round final on penalties to Nacional in January, have struggled in the Clausura season but this result comes as a great shock and is humiliating for manager Jose Daniel Carreno in his second spell in charge.

First half

Torque blew Wanderers away with some fantastic football. It took them just under a minute to go ahead with Dario Pereira finishing off a fluid move with an angled finish past the goalkeeper after a through ball by Andrew Teuten

Wanderers did find themselves level six minutes later when Mauro Mendez tapped in after a scramble in the box.

The visitors grabbed the lead just before half time with another flowing move. Gustavo del Prete robbed Darwin Torres of possession and fed Jose Ignacio Alvarez Medero, who played a perfectly weighted through ball to Marcelo Allende who drilled a shot into the far corner.

Second half

Alvarez Medero then got a goal of his own six minutes into the second half, faking a shot to turn inside past Lucas Couto Silva and finding the bottom corner with a precise finish.

Matias Santos made it four, finishing off the rebound after Mauro Santiago Silveira Laucuesta fumbled Diego Arismendi’s header.

The scoring did not stop with the visitors ruthless in front of goal. Matias Santos’ made a direct run down the right and pulled one back for Allendre to guide a shot into the bottom corner.

Yonatthan Rak’s towering header was the sixth goal for Torque, before Matias Cocccaro beat the offside trap and rounded the Wanderers keeper to score their fifth goal in 17 second half minutes.

Nicolas Quagliata grabbed a consolation but the scoring didn’t finish there with Jose Alvarez caressing a shot into the bottom corner to complete the scoring and add to the humiliation.

What it means

Torque remain third but the victory will have given the club a major confidence boost. They are three points behind Liverpool in first place.

Wanderers are 10th with 13 points. Jose Daniel Carreno’s side did respond with a win in the Copa Libertadores but need to get their league season going. They face Plaza Colonia on Friday.
