Liverpool march on

Liverpool Montevideo continued their excellent start to the season with a 2-1 win over Wanderers in the Uruguay Primera Division.

Marcelo Mendez’s side have started the season off in great form and are still unbeaten with five wins from eight games.

First half

Liverpool striker Ignacio Ramirez had a shot tipped over by namesake Ignacio de Arruabarrena as the hosts started strongly.

They took the lead when a well worked move from a short corner ended with a clinical header into the corner from Christian Almeida after 28 minutes.

Second half

In the second half, Ramirez blazed over from close range after the Wanderers defenders failed to deal with a direct ball forward.

However, he raced clear and held off Paulo Lima to double the hosts’ lead in the 53rd minute.

It was his seventh goal of the Clausura season – the most in the division.

Wanderers pulled one back through Hernan Rivero, who tapped in after Bruno Correa rolled the ball across the six-yard box.

They pushed for an equaliser and Diego Hernandez was denied by a sprawling save from Sebastian Lentinelly.

What it means

The hosts held on to go six points clear of their rivals, with 18 points from their eight matches.
