United shock City
Manchester United ended Manchester City’s 21-game winning run in all competitions with an excellent 2-0 win at the Etihad.
First half
In a dramatic opening, Gabriel Jesus clumsily brought down Anthony Martial in the penalty area inside 30 seconds.
Ederson got a hand to Bruno Fernandes’ penalty but he couldn’t keep it out. The penalty after 101 seconds is the earliest goal Man City have conceded in a league match at the Etihad.
It was the first goal United had scored in four after three games without a goal.
City weren’t at their fluid best and barely tested Dean Henderson in the United goal with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side resolute and disciplined in defence.
Second half
Rodri hit the woodwork just after half time but Luke Shaw’s marauding run and finish into the bottom corner gave United the confidence to see out the win.
The left-back turned past Joao Cancelo and then exchanged passes with Marcus Rashford before firing a shot through the legs of Rodri and into the net.
What it means
The Red Devils move back up to second, a point ahead of Leicester. They have cut the gap to City at the top to 11 points.
