Paraguayan Primera Division round-up: Libertad win thriller, Cerro Porteño draw, 10-man Olimpia win

Libertad go top

Libertad climbed to the top of the Paraguayan Primera Division with a 4-3 win against bottom-side General Diaz.

The visitors went a goal up through Matias David Espinoza Acosta in the 28th minute and doubled their lead when Antonio Bareiro netted.

Pablo Velazguez pulled one back for the hosts in the 34th minute but former Benfica striker Oscar Cardozo re-established the two goal lead with a penalty two minutes before half-time. It was Cardozo’s 11th goal of the Apertura and Clausura season.

Velazguez scored his second of the game on the hour mark, before Alfio Oviedo made it 4-2 in the 76th minute. Jorge Daniel Gonzales Marquet grabbed a consolation for General Diaz in the 84th minute.

Cerro Porteño concede late to draw

Apertura champions Cerro Porteño were denied a third Clausura win of the season in the final minutes as they drew 1-1 with Guaireña.

Nelson Valdez gave Cerro Porteño the lead in the 66th minute after all 11 players touched the ball in the build-up, but an 88th minute equaliser from Carlos Agustin Duarte Martinez meant the points were shared.

Porteño are second in the table after two wins and two draws from their four games.

Olimpia win

Olimpia are into fourth as they made it back-to-back wins with a 3-1 win away at Sol de America.

Former Blackburn and Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz scored his 12th goal of the season, while there were also goals from Jorge Eduardo Recalde and Alejandro Silva Gonzalez for Olimpia.

Mudo Valdes scored a consolation while Juan Rodrigo Rojas was sent off for the hosts in the last few minutes.
