Olimpia go top

Olimpia are the new leaders of the Paraguayan Premier Division after they beat 12 de Octubre 2-1 at the Manuel Ferreira Stadium.

Santa Cruz double

Roque Santa Cruz scored a brace in the opening half-hour to give his side their third successive win.

He has scored 14 goals in the league this season (including Apertura matches).

Santa Cruz opened the scoring in the 15th minute. He controlled a long pinpoint pass and beat the onrushing goalkeeper to the ball, and then coolly turned past a defender and side-footed the ball into the net.

His second goal came in more fortuitous circumstances, as a clearance from a Diego Torres cross was mishit into the path of the striker who made no mistake from three yards. He has now scored 82 goals for the club.

David Ariel Mendieta scored a deflected strike from distance in the 55th minute to halve the deficit.

Olimpia lead the table with 10 points after five matches. They are ahead of 12 de Octubre and Nacional on goal difference but both of those sides have played a game more.

Nacional up to second

Nacional beat Libertad 2-0 to go up to second in the table.

Leonardo Villagra scored a 51st minute penalty, while the second goal came from Carlos Arrua. They are yet to lose in the Clausura this season, winning two and drawing their other four matches.
