12 de Octubre respond

12 de Octubre responded from their heavy defeat by beating Guaireña 3-0 in the Paraguay Primera Division.

Fabian Ovejero headed home three minutes before half-time to give the hosts the lead.

Junior Marabel then doubled their lead after he was put through on goal by a clever backheel by Jose Nuñez.

Both sides had goals disallowed by VAR, before Marabel returned the favour by assisting Nuñez in stoppage time.

What it means

12 de Octubre are up to third with the victory, just two points behind the leaders. Guaireña are ninth with 11 points from nine matches

Olimpia lose again

Elsewhere, Olimpia were beaten 2-0 by Guarani to make it back-to-back defeats for Nestor Gorosito’s side.

Christian Baez broke the deadlock in the 58th minute from the penalty spot after Cecilio Dominguez was brought down in the area.

Fernando Fernandez then sealed the win with four minutes to go, finding the bottom corner with a precise strike.

What it means

Olimpia are now fifth in the table, level on points with Guarani – who moved up to sixth.

Guarani have scored just nine goals this season but have the best away record – having conceded just six goals.

Libertad equalise in injury time

Oscar Cardozo scored an injury-time equaliser from the penalty spot to rescue a point for Libertad, as they came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Sportivo Luqueño.

It was his 12th goal of the season (including Apertura games).

Aldo Vera scored a freak goal to put Luqeuño ahead in the 48th minute – with a cross from the right-hand side going off the post and into the net.

Valdeci made it 2-0 to the hosts with a brilliant effort from the right-hand six of the box. He cut inside on to his left foot and curled it into the top corner.

Libertad fought back and pulled one back when Antonio Bareiro beat the goalkeeper from close range with a clinical shot.

The visitors drew 2-2 in their previous away game and did so again.

The referee, after reviewing the decision on the VAR monitor, awarded them a penalty for foul on Adrian Martinez by Oscar Vidal where the defender attempted the clear the ball but caught the foot of Martinez in the motion.

Cardozo blasted the penalty in the top corner to score Libertad’s 17th goal in nine games – the most in the division.

What it means

Libertad are fourth while Luqeuño are three points further back in eighth place.

Fixtures

Libertad host Guarani with the hope of closing the gap on the top three. Olimpia face bottom side General Diaz as they aim to return to winning ways, while 12 de Octubre travel to Sol de America. Luqueño also visit Guairena.
