Paraguayan Primera Division round-up: Santa Cruz scores brace as Olimpia draw, 12 de Octubre go top

Olimpia drop down to third with a draw

Olimpia’s three match winning run in the league ended as they drew 2-2 against Sportivo Luqueño. The match was Nestor Gorosito’s first as manager of Olimpia.


The match

Orlando Gaona Lugo scored his fourth goal of the season (including Apertura) as he reacted first after a Blas Diaz shot was parried by Alfredo Aguilar into his path.

Olimpia equalised in the 51st minute when Roque Santa Cruz bundled the ball into the goal after Alejandro Duarte dropped the ball at his feet. It was his 16th goal in 22 league matches this season.

Luqueño went ahead just after the hour mark when Blas Dias hit an unstoppable shot on the half-volley that flew into the bottom corner.


Santa Cruz goals

Santa Cruz secured a point for the visitors and scored his 17th this season (including Apertura) when he pounced after a header was parried by the goalkeeper. He has scored six in his last five games and has now scored 84 goals for the club.

The away side went down to 10 in the 88th minute when Ivan Torres was sent off for two yellows.


12 de Octubre go top

Olimpia are now third in the league, two points behind 12 de Octubre who took advantage of their draw by beating Guarani 1-0 and going top of the league.

Pablo Ayala scored the only goal of the game in the 51st minute with a side-footed shot from the edge of the box. 12 de Octubre are a point clear at the top but have played a game more than their rivals.


Cerro Porteño take four from six

Cerro Porteño are in second after taking four points from their two matches this week,

They beat River Plate 2-1 in an eventful match that saw both sides have a man sent off.

Claudio Aquino scored in the seventh minute with a powerful strike to the near-post that caught the keeper out.

Aquino then helped set up the second goal for Angel Lucena to slide past the keeper in the 17th minute. Dionisio Perez scored for River Plate a minute before half time but they couldn’t find an equaliser.

They then could’ve gone top with a win but drew 0-0 against Sol de America. They are unbeaten with three wins and three draws.

Olimpia host River Plate this weekend, while 12 de Octubre travel to Libertad. Cerro Porteño face bottom side General Diaz
