Tourcoing top of the table

Tourcoing won their fifth league match in a row against rivals Cannes 3-0 to stay at the top of the French Ligue National Volley (LNV) division.

The side from Northern France strengthened their squad prior to the season as well as recruiting manager Mauricio Paes and they have started the season in top form – winning 15 sets and losing just four.

Tourcoing served nine aces with Luciano Palonsky scoring 17 points. They won the first set 25-22 and edged the second set 31-29 before sealing the third set 25-17. Tourcoing lead the table on 14 points – two ahead of second-placed Tours on 12 points. Cannes are in thirdfive points off the top of the table.

Champions in second

Tours, who led the table before the season was ended prematurely in 2019 due to the pandemic, have won seven LNV titles in their history and are the reigning champions after winning it in 2018. Β They have started the season well, winning four games in a row after a defeat on the opening day to Cannes.

Tours beat seventh-placed side Poitiers 3-1 on Saturday with key player Petrus Montes scoring 14 points.

Other results

Nantes won their first game of the season against Chaumont 3-2 in a topsy-turvy match. Michel Fedrizzi and Peter Michalovic were crucial – scoring 24 and 30 points respectively for the hosts.

Montpellier jumped up to fourth place with a 3-1 win at bottom of the table Ajaccio. Nicolas Le Goff was a defensive rock, making five blocks.

Sete beat Cambrai 3-2 despite Daniel Cagliari scoring a season-record 38 points for the losing side. Frenchman Bapsiste Geiler scored 27 points for Sete.

Top-scorers

Nantes’ Peter Michalovic has scored the most points this season with 130. Cannes’ Lincoln Williams is in second with 101. Sete outside hitter Kamil Baranek leads the ace count with 12 with Julio Cardenas of Tourcoing and Lincoln Williams joint second with nine.
