Fecha 8 and 9 of the Liga Profesional saw a rarity for River Plate this season: back-to-back victories. Meanwhile, Carlos Tevez led Rosario Central to a victory in their derby against Newell’s Old Boys and we have new leaders in Atletico Tucuman.
Fecha 9
Boca lose again
Boca Juniors suffered another defeat, this time at the hands of Argentinos Juniors. Gabriel Carabajal gave Argentinos the lead when he fired in a long-range effort straight into the top corner in the 23rd minute.
Carabajal then turned provider when his cross was headed in by Gaston Veron just before half-time.
Los Xeneizes failed to get back into the game in the second half and lost 2-0. Despite having 64% possession, Hugo Ibarra’s side only managed 1 shot on target while Argentinos, who were far more clinical, had 5.
Tevez wins the Rosario derby
In their local derby, Carlos Tevez’s Rosario Central beat Newell’s Old Boys 1-0. The goal came just before halftime when Jhonatan Candia’s cross was looped into the net from a header by Alejo Veliz.
Tevez’s side had just 38% possession but still managed the same amount of shots on target as Newell’s. Rosario made the most of their chances, which is why they prevailed in the grudge match.

River finally get much-needed win
After not winning a game in the Liga since Fecha 5, River Plate finally put their bad run of results behind them as they beat Gimnasia 1-0.
Lucas Beltran’s finish into the bottom corner at El Monumental was enough to see off the visitors. It was a deserved victory for Marcelo Gallardo’s side who should have scored more as they had 20 shots with 9 on target.
Fecha 10
…And then make it back-to-back wins
River Plate continued their improved form with another victory, this time over Aldosivi. It took until the 71st minute for them to take the lead when Agustín Palavecino poked the ball in to give River the lead.
Los Millonarios doubled their lead two minutes after a great run by Miguel Borja who unselfishly squared the ball to Lucas Beltran to tap into an open net.

The 3-0 victory was sealed when Borja, whose impressive dribbling had caused Aldosivi’s defence problems since he was introduced, got his goal as he ran through as if no defenders were there before slotting the ball into the net.
It was a dominant display for Marcelo Gallardo’s side who had 69% of possession and had 9 shots on target to Aldosivi’s 1.
Boca back to winning ways
Boca Juniors beat Estudiantes 3-1 at La Bombonera as Hugo Ibarro’s side returned to form. The match started well for the home side as Guillermo Fernandez acrobatically finished off a cross from Luis Vazquez in the 10th minute.
Marcos Rojo doubled their lead in the 58th minute as he fired the ball into the top corner from just outside the box.

10 minutes later, an Oscar Romero pass found Sebastian Villa, who curled the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper Mariano Andujar and into the net.
Estudiantes got one back in the 76th minute as Jorge Morel nodded in after a game of head tennis in the box but it was nothing more than a consolation.
Los Xeneizes were deserved winners, with 56% of possession and 20 attempts on goal to Estudiantes’ 10.
Atlético Tucumán top the table
The league leaders are now Atletico Tucuman after their 1-0 victory over Independiente. The goal came in the very first minute, when Ramiro Ruiz Rodriguez’s cutback found Augusto Lotti who tapped the ball in.
Atletico Tucuman had just 37% possession but still managed the same amount of shots on target as Independiente of 3. Tucuman have now won their last five games and sit two points clear at the summit of the Liga Profesional with 22 points. They are above Argentinos Juniors who drew 1-1 with Banfield. El Decano is also the only side in the division yet to lose a game and they have also conceded the least amount of goals (3).
Lucas Pusineri’s side faces Newell’s Old Boys in the next round of fixtures as they look to extend their winning streak and maintain their place at the top of the League.
