Plaza Amador crowned champions

Plaza Amador came from behind to beat Universitario 2-1 and be crowned champions of Panama for the seventh time.

The match

Universitario took the lead after 19 minutes when a cross from Kevin Calderon was flicked on by a Plaza Amador defender and fell perfectly for Jair Catuy to sidefoot home from close range.

Just six minutes later, Jorge Dely Valdés’ side levelled when Manuel Gamboa rose above goalkeeper José Guerra to head into the net.

Guerra came out to claim the ball but he misjudged the flight and Gamboa leapt above him to score and put his side level.

In a closely fought match, the outcome was decided by a moment. And that came just after the hour mark when Samir Ramirez’s pinpoint cross was prodded home by Ronaldo Dinolis.

What does it mean?

It proved to be the winner as Plaza Amador held on to win their seventh Panama title. There were celebratory scenes after the game with fans, coaches and players all involved.
