Liga ACB round-up: Tenerife win again, Barca have mixed week, late win for Valencia

Six wins out of six

Iberostar Tenerife are in second place in the Liga CB after winning for the sixth game running against Unicaja Malaga 86-79.

Tenerife, who have made their best start to a league season, are second after winning all six ACB games.

They trailed 44-40 at half-time against Unicaja, who had won their last three ACB matches. However, former Unicaja player Giorgi Shermadini and Aaron Doornekamp both scored 22 to keep Tenerife’s winning run going.

Doornekamp was prolific with his three point attempts – scoring six out of eight attempts. Alberto Diaz scored 19 for the hosts.

Mixed week for Barca

Elsewhere, Barcelona had a mixed week in the Liga ACB, winning 82-71 against MoraBanc Andorra at the weekend, but lost 77-73 in a tight encounter against Ucam Murcia.

Barca won their fifth ACB match of the season with Rolando Šmits scoring 15 points and two rebounds. Nikola Mirotić scored 14 points and made four rebounds. Nick Calathes made 12 assists for Barcelona. It was MoraBanc’s fourth defeat of the season.

However, in an away match to Ucam Murcia, Barcelona lost their second match of the ACB season with Murcia’s Jordan Davis scoring 27 points.

Murcia started the match with intent and led 27-6 in the first quarter. Barcelona fought back and levelled the match at 73-73 but Davis scored a crucial basket and two free-throws to win the game for Murcia. The loss means Barcelona sit in third place behind Tenerife and Real Madrid.

Frankamp top for points

American Conner Frankamp scored 10 for Murcia and he is the top points-scorer in the division with 130 in seven matches.

Valencia win in the final seconds

Valencia edged past Obradoiro 78-77 in a dramatic win in Galicia with Bojan Dubljević converting a basket with three seconds to go to steal a win for his side.

It was a close game throughout with the visitors leading 39-33 at half-time. In the fourth quarter, Valencia were 66-61 ahead but Jake Cohen made a huge effort, scoring 17 points in the match for Obradoiro, helping to turn the game around.

However, Dubljević had the final say with a crucial basket to give Valencia their fourth win of the season after seven games. The Montenegrin scored 10 points, made five rebounds and two blocks.

Birutis on top for rebounds

Obradoiro player Laurynas Birutis made four rebounds, and he leads the table for rebounds in the division with 52 from eight matches.

Baskonia win

Baskonia are into fourth after winning their fifth game of eight against Manresa. Key man Achille Polonara scored 17 points and made 13 rebounds.
