Freiburg survive onslaught to draw
Freiburg II were held to a 1-1 draw against promotion rivals Kickers Offenbach in the German Regionalliga Südwest.
The match
The league-leaders took the lead after 11 minutes when Guillaume Furrer controlled a Konrad Faber cross in the penalty area and then fired an unstoppable shot past Stephan Flauder high into the net.
The hosts responded well and came close to an equaliser with Elia Soriano hitting the post and having a shot brilliantly saved by Freiburg II goalkeeper Noah Atubolu.
Kickers Offenbach pressed for an equaliser in the second half and eventually levelled in the 78th minute when Soriano rose high from a corner to glance a header into the far corner.
Offenbach had the better of the play and had chances to win the game, but had to settle for a point. Freiburg II manager Christian Preusser was ‘absolutely satisfied with the result and the somewhat lucky point.’
What it means
Freiburg II stay three points clear of TSV Steinbach in second. Kickers Offenbach are fourth but have a game in hand on the three sides above them.
Steinbach salvage a point
TSV Steinbach equalised in the last minute to rescue a point against Hoffenheim II.
The match
Hoffenheim, who are in the bottom seven, took the game to the second-placed side and opened the scoring with a magnificent goal.
Frenchman Georginio Rutter received the ball in central midfield, drove inside an opponent before playing a remarkable lobbed pass into the path of Rui Mendes who waited for the ball to sit and hit a half-volley past Raphael Koczor.
TSV Steinbach upped the ante but the hosts had opportunities for a second goal.
Sascha Marquet was left free at the back post to knock in Manuel Hoffmann’s cross in the 90th minute. It was a cruel goal for Hoffenheim to swallow, who thought they had secured a major win.
What it means
Hoffenheim II are unbeaten in three games but remain 17th. Steinbach did not lose any ground on Freiburg after both sides drew.
The biggest winners in the top half were Ulm, who are up to third after four successive wins. They beat Bahlinger 1-0 at the weekend and then impressively saw off FSV Frankfurt with a 3-1 win.
What it means
Ulm are now just three points behind Freiburg having played the same amount of games.
