Dortmund II one point away
Borussia Dortmund II need just a point in their final game of the season to secure promotion to the German third division after they beat Bergisch Gladbach.
In a match that had ramifications for both sides at different ends of the table, Bergisch Gladbach were relegated following their defeat.
First half
In their last home game of the season, which housed 500 fans, Dortmund II took a giant step towards promotion with a commanding performance.
The visitors were compact and disciplined but the Black & Yellows breached the Bergisch Gladbach defence midway through the first half.
A fortunate ricochet put Alaa Bakir on goal. He selflessly teed up Richmond Tachie, who passed the ball into the empty net.
Second half
Dortmund went into half-time a goal up and then stepped up their game in the second half. Steffen Tigges blazed over, but Dominik Wanner made no mistake a few minutes later after a scintillating move.
Tachie played a sensational rabona pass to play in Tigges. The striker burst past a defender and laid in Wanner, who tapped in.
It was a brilliant goal by BVB, their 91st league goal of the season.
Tigges then demonstrated his poaching instincts to react quickest after a clearance struck Tachie and rebounded into his path. He flicked the ball past Dennis Lohmann to score his 21st goal of the season.
Serhat Koruk replied from the spot with a few minutes remaining to grab a consolation.
What does it mean?
The defeat confirmed Bergisch Gladbach’s relegation while Dortmund are now on the brink of promotion.
They need to avoid defeat on the final day against Wuppertaler to confirm promotion. If RW Essen fail to win then Dortmund will be promoted regardless of their result.
RW Ahlen secure safety after great escape
Elsewhere, RW Ahlen secured safety with their third successive win, a brilliant turnaround after being cut adrift at the bottom just a number of weeks ago. They beat Straelen 3-2 in front of 500 spectators to confirm their place in the Regionalliga West division with a game to spare.
