RW Essen close gap to one point
RW Essen closed the gap at the top of the German Regionalliga West table to just one point after they beat Wuppertaler 2-1.
Wuppertaler, managed by Björn Mehnert, have enjoyed a productive 2021, winning 10 of their last 17 matches going into the clash. They were hammered 6-1 by RW Essen in November, but made a greater fist of this match.
Daniel Heber opened the scoring after 20 minutes for the visitors after heading Kevin Grund’s cross into the corner.
But the second goal didn’t come soon after, and it was a tough grind for Christian Neidhart’s men in a must-win game.
The hosts pushed for an equaliser and came close on a number of occasions but Steven Lewerenz came off the bench to score an excellent solo goal and wrap up the points with two minutes remaining.
The match looked won until Moritz Romling pulled one back in stoppage time.
