Freiburg II on the brink

Freiburg II need just two wins to secure promotion from the German Regionalliga Südwest league after they battered already-relegated Stadtallendorf 5-1.

It was their ninth win in a row and it meant they maintained their seven-point lead at the top of the league, having played a game fewer.

Christian Preusser’s side are an unstoppable force at the moment and have won 26 of 37 games this season.

The match

Nishan Burkart opened the scoring from close range in the 19th minute with his 16th of the season, before defender Kiliann Sildillia doubled the hosts’ lead with a header. Stadtallendorf halved the deficit before half-time after an excellent free-kick from American Malcom Phillips.

However, Freiburg II stepped up the gears in the second half and scored three times. Kevin Schade’s left-footed shot re-established the two-goal lead for the hosts, before he added another after Burkart set him up.

Emilio Kehrer scored his 11th goal of the season from the spot to notch Freiburg II’s 89th league goal of the season.

What does it mean?

Their lead is seven points over Elversberg, who won their eighth game in a row when they beat Hoffenheim II 2-0. Koffi and Luca Pascal Schnellbacher both scored to delay the promotion party for Freiburg.

Freiburg II can edge closer to the title when they travel to Kassel on Saturday.
