Freiburg II are almost there

Freiburg II are on the brink of promotion after they beat thrashed Ulm 3-0 to go eight points clear with three games remaining.

It was their 27th win from 39 games and a perfect response to the frustrating 0-0 draw against Hessen Kassel last weekend.

Freiburg II can secure the title and promotion to the third division if they beat Homberg on Saturday at home.

The match

19-year-old Noah Weisshaupt opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a low strike to score Freiburg’s 90th goal of the league season.

Shortly after, Kevin Schade headed onto the crossbar. Ulm didn’t carry much of a a threat until three minutes from half-time when Robin Heußer hit the post.

At the beginning of the second-half, Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu had to intervene for the first time, parrying a header from Felix Higl.

However, it wasn’t long before the hosts doubled their lead as Konrad Faber made it 2-0 in the 55th minute. Freiburg then managed the game well and held firm until the latter stages when Junior Eyamba notched his first goal for the club two minutes from time.

What does it mean?

Ulm had won their previous six games but they were handsomely beaten and have dropped to fourth on goal difference. Freiburg have won 12 of their last 14 games, drawing the other two. They can win promotion with a victory against Homberg.

Pressuer speaks before Dussedorf annoucement

‘’We are of course overjoyed, but we are not finished yet,” said Christian Preusser, the Freiburg coach.

“We want to finish it on Saturday,’’ he added.
