Freiburg fail to secure promotion

Freiburg’s wait to be crowned champions of the Regionalliga Südwest was delayed by another few days as they were beaten 1-0 by Homburg.

The shock defeat was their first in 15 games and meant their promotion party will have to wait.

A run of 12 wins from their previous 14 games has put them clear at the top of the table and in pole position for promotion.

They could have secured promotion with a win but they were denied as the visitors took all three points.

First half

Homburg started well and hit the post in the opening few minutes after a shot by Damjan Marceta. The hosts then started to dominate proceedings and went close when Kevin Schade poked a shot over the bar.

Second half

Schade had more opportunities in the second half and was thwarted by goalkeeper David Salfeld. He also saved well from substitute David Nieland. But Homburg were a threat on the counter and they scored the decisive goal with just under 20 minutes remaining.

After a foul wasn’t given on the halfway line, Homburg broke with numbers. Philipp Schuck was found in space on the left wing, and his cross was turned in Marceta.

What does it mean?

The hosts then piled on the pressure as Nieland and Emilio Kehrer had chances to equalise. Freiburg were beaten for the first time since March, but they can secure promotion without playing if Elversberg fail to beat TSV Steinbach Haiger.

If Elversberg win then Freiburg can go up with a draw or win against their rivals on Saturday. Homburg rose to seventh in the table with the win.
