Freiburg II go eight points clear

Freiburg II have extended their lead to eight points at the top of the German Regionalliga Südwest after they beat Pirmasens 1-0 and second-placed side Offenbach dropped points.

It was the league leaders’ fourth straight win, keeping clean sheets in all four games. They have also won six games from their last seven in the league.

The match

Freiburg II dominated the play in the first half but were unable to break down a stubborn defence. They were presented with an opportunity to take the lead at the beginning of the second half when Salif Cisse handballed a shot by Emilio Kehrer in the penalty area.

Nishant Burkart, who had scored four times from the penalty spot this season, hit his penalty wide.

However, Konrad Faber spared the blushes of Burkart with the winning goal in the 68th minute to give Christian Preusser’s side the three points.

What it means

Freiburg II are now eight points clear of rivals Offenbach in the table from 32 matches after Offenbach drew 1-1 at home to Stuttgart. Florent Bojaj gave the hosts the lead before they were pegged back by an equaliser from Stuttgart midfielder Marco Pasalic with seven minutes remaining.

Offenbach are unbeaten in their last six and remain second. Stuttgart stay seventh.

After Pirmasens’ narrow defeat to Freiburg, they have dropped to 16th, two points from the relegation zone.

Freiburg II face second-bottom side Alzenau this evening while Offenbach travel to Schott Mainz.
