Apollon score five to go second

Anorthosis were beaten 2-1 away to Doxa Katokopias and Apollon Limassol, as well as AEL Limassol, took advantage of the surprise loss.

Apollon had won just once in their past four games before the trip to bottom side Enosis Paralimni. However, they bounced back from a defeat to their neighbours AEL last week by winning 5-1.

The match

Giannis Gianniotas opened the scoring in the 29th minute, reacting quickest to score after the goalkeeper fumbled Joao Pedro’s cross.

They made it two just four minutes later, with Ioannis Pittas forcing home the rebound after Florentin Matei’s shot was saved by Paralimni stopper Konstantinos Petrou.

Apollon led 2-0 at half-time but the deficit was halved in the 67th minute when Emanuel Dening poked home after the ball fell loose in the penalty area.

Pittas scored his second of the game in the 85th minute to settle the nerves. He slid in to score from close range after Gianniotas crossed from the right hand side.

Paralimni then committed men forward to try and salvage a result, but left gaps to exploit and Pittas was sent through on goal to score his hat-trick but his shot was saved. Joao Pedro was there to finish into an empty net.

They made it five in stoppage time when substitute Nicolas Diguiny finished at the near-post with the outside of his boot. Despite coming off the bench, he scored his eighth goal of the season – the most in the division

Stats

Apollon have scored the most goals in the division with 27 and have conceded the second fewest with 10.

Paralimni are bottom with 8 defeats in 13 games and have conceded 25 goals,

Other results

After successive wins under Mick McCarthy, APOEL Nicosia suffered a heavy defeat – losing 3-0 at home to AC Omonia in the Nicosia derby. Champions APOEL are ninth with four wins from 13 games.

Elsewhere, AEK Larnaca moved up to fourth after a 4-0 win against Olympiakos Nicosia.
