Apollon go top

Apollon Limassol went top of the Cyprus first division after they beat AEK Larnaca 2-1 in the first match for new manager Gianni Petraki.

Ioannis Pittas gave the visitors the lead in the 28th minute, cutting on from the left wing and firing a shot into the near-post.

Acoran Barrera equalised for AEK Larnaca with a great individual goal in the 66th minute. He cut inside from the left-hand side, taking the ball past a few defenders and blasted his shot into the top corner.

Nicolas Diguiny scored the winning goal for Apollon in the 73rd minute, finishing at the back post after a sweeping move.

Anorthosis lose

Apollon Limassol took advantage of previous leaders Anorthosis losing 1-0 against AEL Limassol. Ryan Mmaee scored the only goal for AEL in the 66th minute. It was Anorthosis’s first defeat in seven league games.

The two clubs are tied on 23 points with Apollon ahead due to a superior head-to-head record. They also have a game in hand on their rivals.

APOEL endure mixed week

APOEL Nicosia had a mixed week under new manager Mick McCarthy, recovering from a 1-0 defeat to Olympiakos Nicosia to beat Doxa Katokopias 2-0 on Wednesday.

The win was McCarthy’s first as APOEL’s manager in his third game. Giorgos Merkis broke the deadlock in the 57th minute, and a Ghayas Zahid penalty secured the win for the hosts.

The champions are ninth with just three wins from 11 games.
