Wolfsburg win thriller to stay unbeaten

Wolfsburg beat Werder Bremen 5-3 in a thrilling match to move up to fifth and maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

The match

Leonardo Bittencourt finished smartly at the back-post to gave the visitors the lead, before Bote Baku equalised for Wolfsburg midway through the first half.

Wolfsburg took the lead through John Anthony Brooks’s header. Bremen then levelled in the 36th minute through an outstanding leap and flicked header by substitute Kevin Möhwald at the near-post.

But a minute later Wolfsburg restored their lead when Wout Weghorst beat the keeper from close range. The goal meant that all five shots on target in the first half had been scored.

Brooks scored in his own net to level the score at 3-3 just after half-time but Weghorst powered a header into the net to put the hosts head and score his sixth goal in six games.

Bartosz Bialek sealed the win for Wolfsburg in injury time, scoring his first Bundesliga goal and ending Werder’s seven game unbeaten run. Wolfsburg have now won their past three games, and are fifth in the table with 17 points from nine games.

Leipzig win at home again

RB Leipzig moved up to second with a 2-1 win against struggling Arminia Bielefeld.

Goals from left-back Angelino and Christopher Nkunku gave Julian Nagelsmann’s side a narrow win against second-bottom Arminia and meant they have won all five matches at home in the Bundesliga.

They have scored at least two goals in each of their five home matches. Leipzig have made their best ever start to a Bundesliga season, taking 20 points from nine games.

Angelino has now scored six goals in all competitions this season and is Leipzig’s top scorer. The visitors have now lost their last seven games.

Leverkusen draw but up to second

Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen moved up to third in the table despite drawing 0-0 against Hertha Berlin. The draw means they are still unbeaten in the Bundesliga this season, with five wins and four draws. They were without top scorer Lucas Alario through injury.

Schalke’s woes continue

Borussia Monchengladbach hammered bottom of the table Schalke 4-1 to get back to winning ways in the Bundesliga after two matches without a win. Schalke’s winless spell continues – they have not won in the Bundesliga since January, a run of 25 games.

Rollercoaster match in Berlin

In another thriller, Union Berlin threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Eintracht Frankfurt. The hosts went two goals up inside six minutes through Robert Andrich and a Max Kruse penalty but two Andre Silva goals levelled things up before half-time.

Bas Dost completed the comeback in the 79th minute, before Max Kruse salvaged a point for Union Berlin. Union are in sixth place and are unbeaten in seven league games.
