Bayern take advantage
Bayern Munich were the only team from the top four of the Bundesliga to win at the weekend as they beat Freiburg 2-1 to extend their lead at the top to four points after RB Leipzig drew 2-2 at Wolfsburg.
The match
Robert Lewandowski became the first player in Bundesliga history to score 21 goals in the first half of the season. He has done it in 16 games. He finished coolly after a brilliant first time pass from Thomas Muller in the seventh minute.
Bayern were dominant and Lewandowski’s deflected shot hit the bar from an Alphonso Davies in the second half.
However, Freiburg equalised just after the hour mark when Nils Petersen met a flick on to score with his first touch at the back-post. It was the sixth goal Freiburg had scored from a corner this season. He had only been on the pitch for 24 seconds.
Bayern restored their lead and got the crucial winner when Thomas Muller’s sidefoot finish found the bottom corner with 16 minutes to go.
The defeat ended a run of five consecutive wins for Freiburg.
Bayern travel to Augsburg on Wednesday, who have lost their last two games by an aggregate score of 6-1.
Dortmund travel to Leverkusen
Borussia Dortmund face Bayer Leverkusen this evening, hoping to bounce back from their 1-1 draw against Mainz.
The match
Robin Zentner was in inspired form as he kept Dortmund at bay in the first half. Jude Bellingham also hit the post before the break.
They went behind against the run of play when Levin Mete Oztunali’s thunderbolt was too powerful for Roman Buerki.
Thomas Meunier equalised with a low shot that found the corner. Marco Reus then missed from the spot three minutes later after Meunier was fouled.
His penalty went wide of the goal as Dortmund had to settle for a point. They stay fourth in the table but are now seven points off the top.
Leverkusen form
Leverkusen were beaten 1-0 by Union Berlin on Friday night. Peter Bosz’s side have won just once in their last five games. They are above Dortmund in third on goal-difference.
