Dortmund have now lost back-to-back games in the league and drop down to seventh in the table. They are winless in three and have won just three of their last 10 Bundesliga games.
The match
The hosts thought they had taken the lead after a minute through Florian Neuhaus but had the goal disallowed for a foul. They did go in front when Nico Elvedi headed in from an inviting curling free kick by Jonas Hofmann in the 11th minute.
Erling Haaland equalised with a dinked finish after a perfectly weighted through ball by Jadon Sancho in the 22nd minute.
Six minutes later, Haaland put Dortmund ahead after an intricate move involving Jude Bellingham and Sancho. Sancho brilliantly changed feet in the box to find the striker who turned and shot in one motion to fire the visitors ahead.
However, Elvedi then levelled the score in the 32nd minute, tapping in after Roman Burki spilt the ball from a Lars Stindl free kick.
Ramy Bensebaini curled in a superb strike with his weaker foot to put Gladbach ahead in the 49th minute, before substitute Marcus Thuram secured the win with a unmarked header.
What it means
The win ended a run of 11 straight defeats for Marco Rose’s side against Dortmund. They go above Dortmund into fifth on 31 points. Dortmund drop to seventh and are 13 points off the top.
Defeats for Leipzig and Leverkusen
Relegation threatened Mainz came from behind twice to beat RB Leipzig 3-2. Mainz defender Moussa Niakhate netted twice from two set pieces. Leandro Barreiro scored the winner for Mainz, in what was his first career goal.

It was the first win at home for Mainz this season, who are on 10 points from 18 games – 5 points behind Köln. It was also their first win in 10 Bundesliga games.
Julian Nageslmann’s side have now just won once in their last four games and sit seven points behind Bayern Munich.
Elsewhere, Bote Baku scored the only goal as Wolfsburg defeated Bayer Leverkusen to move into the top four.
