Frankfurt beat Bayern to open up title race
Bayern Munich’s lead at the top was cut to two points as they lost 2-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.
First half
Frankfurt were missing their talisman Andre Silva but did not miss him as they delivered a brilliant performance to win their ninth game in their last 10.
In the 12th minute, the hosts got in behind the Bayern defence down the left-hand side. Filip Kostic crossed for Daichi Kamada who placed a shot into the bottom corner.
It was Kostic’s eighth assist of the season. Amin Younes then rifled an unstoppable shot in the top corner to double the hosts’ lead.
Kevin Trapp made a smart double save to preserve Frankfurt’s two-goal lead at the break.
Leon Goretzka was brought on at half-time and Bayern started to show their true selves.
Second half
Leroy Sane twisted and turned past two defenders and found marksman Robert Lewandowski, who scored his customary goal.
It was his 26th league goal in an extraordinary season for the Pole.
Sane then created another chance; his cross found Kingsley Coman but his shot was wide of the post.
What it means
Eintracht Frankfurt held on to win their fifth game in a row and ninth in their last 10. They have cemented a place in the top four, and are five points clear of Leverkusen in fifth.
Bayern have had a disappointing week; taking just one point from six. Their lead is down to two points.
