Superliga Overview
Before we give a rundown of the regular season results let’s remind you how the format works for both the Men’s and Women’s leagues. The 2021/2022 season marks the 28th men’s and 27th women’s edition of the tournament, with both championships having begun back in October of last year.
The two leagues have 12 teams competing in the championship, with all clubs playing in a single group with round-robin matches. The top 8 clubs advance to the playoffs stage in the quarterfinals, with a best-of-3-game knockout match following all the way through to the finals.
FUNVIC are the current champions of the men’s tournament and Minas Tênis Clube are the current champions of the women’s edition.
Regular Season 2021/2022
Minas Tênis Clube topped the men’s regular season with 20 victories and only 2 defeats, the team scored 1980 points and conceded 1716, getting an average of 1,154. In addition, they won 63 sets and lost 18, which left them with an average of 3.5.
In the women’s competition, Praia Clube were the top team with 20 victories and 2 defeats. The team won 63 sets and lost 14, getting an average of 4.50. In points numbers, the team scored 1831 and took 1453, which leaves them with an average of 1,260. The team had the best blocker in the competition, with Carol scoring 113 points.
Quarter-Finals
For the men’s league, the clashes in the quarter-finals were fiercely disputed, but ultimately the favorites advanced.
Minas played against Funvic Natal and won the first two matches (3-1, 3-0). Guarulhos beat São José by 2 games to 1 (3-0, 2-3 and 3-2). Cruzeiro beat São José 2-0 (3-0, 3-0), and SESI/Bauru beat Campinas by 2 games to 1 (0-3, 3-0 and 3-0.
In the women’s league the favorites also advanced.
Praia Clube beat Pinheiros 2-0 (3-0, 3-0). SESC/Flamengo beat Osasco by 2-1 (0-3, 3-0 and 3-1), Minas beat Barueri by 2×0 (3-1 and 3-2) and SESI/Bauru won the Fluminense by 2-0 (3-0 and 3-1).
Semi-finals
With each of the best teams from both the men’s and women’s leagues advancing, the semi-finals could have gone either way for every team involved.
In the women’s competition, Minas advanced to the final, beating SESI/Bauru in two games (3-1, 3-1). Their opponents will be Praia Clube, who needed three games to defeat SESC/Flamengo. SESC took the first game 3-0, before Praia levelled the score four days later, in a 5-set thriller, Praia winning 3-2. Three days after than, Praia won the series with a convincing 3-1 win and booked their spot in the final, with the opening game against Minas taking place in a few days’ time.
In the men’s, two teams advanced with relative comfort. Minas will be proudly fielding both and women’s and a men’s team in the Superliga finals this year, as their men’s team defeated Guarulhos in two straight games – finishing 3-1 and 3-0.
They will face Sada Cruzeiro in the finals, who also won in two straight games. Their first was a hard-fought victory, coming from two sets down to defeat Sesi 3-2. The other game was far more comfortable, winning 3-0.
