It was a Tuesday night of high entertainment and goals galore in League One, as there were wins for Sunderland, Rotherham, Wycombe and Bolton among others.

Five-star Sunderland capitalise on Wigan’s defeat

Sunderland went three points clear at the top of League One after they took advantage of Wigan’s 21 home defeat against Sheffield Wednesday by beating Cheltenham 5-0.

A Ross Stewart brace and a Bailey Wright goal put the Mackems 3-0 up at the break. Luke O’Nien and Leon Dajaku added goals in the second half to ensure Sunderland sit top of League One after 10 matches.

Previous table toppers Wigan went down 2-1 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

A first half own goal from Max Power and a finish from Callum Paterson gave Wednesday a 2-0 lead, before Charlie Wyke pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute.

Ipswich deepen Donny’s misery with six goal hammering

Elsewhere, Ipswich thrashed bottom club Doncaster 6-0 at Portman Road to give Paul Cook’s side their first home win of a disappointing season so far.

On what was a wet and windy night, Doncaster Rovers were well and truly blown away in Suffolk.

Macauley Bonne got his and his side’s first goal in the 13th minute, before Lee Evans got the first of his three goals just after the half hour mark.

Doncaster trailing 2-0 at half time were unable to come out fighting, and the Rovers fans witnessed their side concede another four goals in 10 second half minutes.

Evans got his second before Bonne completed his brace to make it 4-0.

Evans got his hat-trick in the 76th minute, and then defender George Edmundson rounded off the victory to send Doncaster back to South Yorkshire rooted at the foot of the table.

Bolton run riot in the second half to take Charlton apart

It was also a night of defeat for Charlton, who conceded three times in the second half to lose 4-1 at home to Bolton.

Wanderers scored three unanswered goals after the break to condemn Charlton to their sixth defeat of the season.

The Addicks were ahead thanks to a 12th minute strike from Josh Davison. Oladapo Afolayan levelled it up just before the break, before a second half display from Bolton that will have sent the traveling fans home delighted.

Kieran Lee bagged a brace before Antoni Sarcevic scored in the dying moments to seal the victory.

Charlton sit 23rd in the table, only two points ahead of the bottom side, Doncaster, and four points from safety, leaving Nigel Adkins pondering many answers on how to change the form of the struggling pre-season promotion hopefuls.

Oxford back to winning ways; Thriller in Milton Keynes; Portsmouth in a rut

Oxford gained a first win in five matches thanks to an impressive 5-1 win at home to Accrington Stanley.

Nathan Holland scored a brace before Matt Taylor, Mark Sykes and Michael Nottingham own goal all added to the scoreline. Ethan Hamilton scored Accrington’s consolation goal.

Mk Dons and Fleetwood shared the spoils in a 3-3 goal-fest at Stadium MK.

The hosts came from behind twice to level and went in front with 17 minutes remaining but Daniel Batty equalised with two minutes remaining to deny them victory.

There was also a draw for Plymouth at Home Park against Crewe Alexandra, where the score finished 1-1 thanks to Ryan Hardie’s equaliser.

Lincoln City continued to prove they are inconsistent by not being able to build on Saturday’s victory after losing 2-0 at Morecambe. Goals from Cole Stockton and Scott Wootton in the second half saw the Imps return to Lincolnshire empty handed.

Wycombe beat Shrewsbury 2-1 away at Montgomery Waters Meadow Stadium.

Rotherham took the points against AFC Wimbledon with a 3-0 victory, and Gillingham beat Cambridge 2-0. Burton won for the first time in five matches by beating Portsmouth 2-1, who are now winless in seven games.

How it stands

Tonight’s results saw the top two switch places, with Sunderland leading the charge for promotion. MK Dons and Plymouth both move level on points with Wigan.

Rotherham and Wycombe sit two points behind in fifth and sixth respectively.

Sheffield Wednesday move up to ninth. Shrewsbury, Crewe Alexandra, Charlton and Doncaster occupy the bottom four places in League One.
