The Argentinian Primera Division returns this Friday. The 2020 season ended last March just before the football season was impacted by the pandemic.
A look at last season
Boca Juniors were crowned champions for the 34th time after after they pipped River Plate on the final day of the season.
River Plate just needed to win on the final day to secure the title but they slipped up as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Atlético Tucumán.
Boca capitalized with former Manchester United and Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez scoring the winner against Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata at La Bombonera.
The manager of Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata for the final day clash was Diego Maradona, who sadly passed away last November.
A point to prove
River Plate will be desperate to avenge last season’s events, where they faltered under pressure. They will once again by led by iconic coach Marcelo Gallardo, who won six league titles as a player for River Plate but has yet to win one as a manager despite winning many other cups.
Los Millonarios scored the most goals in the division last season, netting 41 in 23 games. But they conceded 10 more goals than Boca Juniors, who incredibly conceded just eight goals in the entire season.
Colon end trophy drought
Only just recently Colon de Santa Fe won the Copa de la Liga, their first title since they were founded 116 years ago. They beat Racing Club 3-0 in the final.
The tournament was designed to replace the traditional league competition after the season was affected due to the pandemic.
