Season review

It’s time to take a look at how the season panned out in Panama and what we learned. Plaza Amador took the Apertura title after a 2-1 win against Universitario in the final.

A look at the top two

Both sides finished top of their respective groups. Universitario finished on more points, taking 30 from 16 games – an average of 1.8 points per game. While Plaza Amador finished with 27 points from 16 games, an average from 1.68. It came down to fine margins in the final with Jorge Dely Valdes’ side edging out their rivals to win their seventh title.

They conceded just 16 goals in 18 games, an average of 0.88 goals per game.

Goals at a premium

Independiente will be looking to build on last season’s showing. They finished on 27 points in Group B and were beaten on penalties by Sporting San Miguelito in the quarter-final of the play-offs after a goalless draw.A lack of goals is what separated them from winning the trophy. They scored just 19 goals in 16 league games, an average of 1.18 per game.

Costa del Este were another team who struggled to score goals. They scored 15 goals in 16 league games and were also beaten on penalties in the quarter-finals.
