German Regionalliga Südwest round-up: Lead cut to five points but Freiburg II still on track for promotion

Freiburg draw a blank

Freiburg II’s nine-game winning run was ended at the weekend as they drew 0-0 against 10-man Hessen Kassel, but they remain on track for promotion from the German Regionalliga Südwest.

Their lead at the top was cut to five points after Elversberg beat Balingen 1-0 but the league-leaders have a game in hand and need a maximum of five points from their remaining four games to win the league.


The match

Johannes Flum hit the bar in the eighth minute, before Emilio Kehrer shot just wide after a one-two with Kevin Schade.

They created numerous opportunities and had a man advantage for the last half-hour of the game, but were unable to find the breakthrough.


What does it mean?

Despite the draw, Christian Preusser’s side remain on track for promotion after winning 11 of their last 13 games.

Hessen Kassel drew their 14th game of the season and sit comfortable in fourteenth, drawing both games against Freiburg II this season.


Elversberg make it nine in a row

Elversberg cut the gap to five points at the top after their narrow 1-0 win against Balingen. Luca Durholtz scored the only goal of the game in the 25th minute to make it nine consecutive wins for Horst Steffen’s side.
