Rearranged fixture

Manchester United host Liverpool in what is a rearranged fixture after the original match was postponed due to protests against the Glazer ownership at Old Trafford and the Lowry hotel.

Season of progress

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have already qualified for the top four and need just one more win to guarantee second. It has been a season of progress for Man United, who have 70 points from 35 games – four more points than they achieved across the whole of last season.

It is United’s third match in five days but they are expected to start a strong side after making 10 changes against Leicester City.

The match against Leicester was a chance to give some of the fringe players a chance, and 18-year-old Amad impressed with his movement and assist.

It was Mason Greenwood – the only player who was retained after the win against Aston Villa – who scored against Leicester with an excellent dribble and finish. It was Greenwood’s eighth goal in his last 11 games in all competitions and six in his last six league games.

Liverpool still in the hunt

It is a must-win game for Liverpool, who were handed a lifeline on Wednesday night, when Chelsea were surprisingly beaten by Arsenal.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are seven points off Chelsea, but have two games in hand. Chelsea still have to play Leicester next week and it could be a decisive game, with Liverpool or maybe West Ham ready to pounce if things fall their way.

Liverpool beat Southampton 2-0 on Saturday night with Sadio Mane and Thiago scoring to keep their top four hopes alive. The Reds are unbeaten in six Premier League games.

Head-to-head

Man United vs Liverpool may be the biggest game in English football, but it is often a damp squib with four of the last six meetings ending level in the Premier League. The two sides drew 0-0 at Anfield earlier last season, while Liverpool are without a win at Old Trafford since March 2014 and have won just once in 15 games at Old Trafford in all competitions.

United have won just one of their last nine meetings with Liverpool (D6, L2), and are winless in five against their rivals.
