Freiburg II on the brink of promotion
Freiburg II are unstoppable at the moment and look like certainties to get promoted from the German Regionalliga Südwest.
The match
They beat Stuttgart II 2-1 to make it seven successive wins and nine wins from their last 10 games.
Kevin Schade opening the scoring with a fine solo goal in the 27th minute, before Nishan Burkart put the hosts two up from the penalty spot four minutes before half-time. It was Burkart’s 15th goal of the season.
Stuttgart II pulled one back through Domenico Alberico, giving the visitors hope of taking something from the match.
The game became more open, but Christian Preusser’s side were always in control. A second penalty killed the game as Emilio Kehrer converted from the spot with three minutes remaining.
What it means
It was Freiburg’s 24th win of the season and the result means they retain their five-point lead at the top, as well as having another game in hand. They need 14 points from their remaining seven games to guarantee promotion. Stuttgart sit ninth and have lost back-to-back games.
Offenbach produce comeback to stay in contention
Freiburg II have had to be faultless in recent weeks as their rivals have piled on the pressure. Kickers Offenbach came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against Homburg and keep their promotion hopes alive.
They have lost just one of their last 21 league games but had to show great spirit to take all three points against Homburg.
