RW Essen conceded a stoppage time equaliser to draw 1-1 against Oberhausen and drop crucial points in the battle for promotion.

First half

The visitors made the perfect start when Simon Engelmann was on hand to trickle a shot off the post and into the net after goalkeeper Robin Benz missed the flight of the ball.

It was his 23rd goal of the season.

Oberhausen then grew into the game and almost levelled after a brilliant team move. Sven Kreyer ran onto a through ball but his angled shot hit the outside of the spot.

RW Essen came incredibly close to doubling their lead when only the crossbar and a full-length save from Benz prevented a second.

A clearance landed to Cedric Harenbrock and he chested the ball down and volleyed it against the bar. The ball landed in the path of Daniel Heber who from two yards out headed it towards goal.

Benz managed to arc his body and palm the ball away from the goal with Jerome Propheter then clearing the ball.

Second half

Kreyer was a consistent threat for the hosts and his near-post effort was well kept out by Daniel Davari.

Heber missed another golden chance for RW Essen to wrap up the win, heading wide from six yards out.

There was a major twist to come in stoppage time.

Oberhausen lumped the ball upfield and won the first header. Heber, who missed a couple of big chances at the other end, lunged for the ball but took out his man and the referee awarded a penalty.

Davari dived the right way but Kreyer’s penalty went under his body and into the net.
