Barboza scores late winner

Alexander Barboza scored a dramatic stoppage time winner as Libertad came from a goal down to beat River Plate 2-1 in the Paraguayan Primera Division.

The match

River Plate fought hard and almost grabbed a point despite going down to 10 men in the 33rd minute when Nicolas Rojas was sent off for two yellow cards.

Alberto Contrera put 10-man River Plate ahead with a sensational swerving free kick from 30 yards out.

Libertad had a goal ruled out by VAR for offside, but were soon level when Oscar Cardozo scored from the spot after substitute Bautista Merlini was brought down by Orlando Gallardo.

Then, in the final seconds, Barboza’s glancing header from Rodrigo Bogarin’s corner found the bottom corner and gave the hosts a fourth win from five league games.

What it means

Gustavo Moringo’s side lead the table with 12 points from five games. River Plate are third bottom with just one win.

Olimpia and Guarani stay in touch

Elsewhere, Olimpia beat Cerro Porteno 2-0 to stay within two points of Libertad at the summit.
