Liverpool Montevideo win again

Liverpool Montevideo continued their brilliant start to the season with a 3-0 dismantling of Defensor Sporting in the Uruguay Primera Division.

The match

The league leaders took the lead when Ignacio Ramirez scored the rebound after his penalty was saved. The forward took the penalty after he was fouled in the box by goalkeeper Matias Castro. It was his eighth goal of the Clausura season and 19th overall.

The game was on a knife-edge until the final two minutes when Franco Romero scored a wonderful second for the visitors. A corner was swung to the back post, Romero controlled the ball with his right foot and then hit an exquisite shot with his left foot.

Another substitute, Gonzalo Bueno wrapped up the win with a side-foot finish from close range after a Fabricio Diaz cross.

What it means

The win extends Liverpool’s unbeaten start to nine games. They extend their lead to three points at the top of the table. Liverpool host Peñarol in an important clash between two of the top four. Defensor Sporting sit eighth in the table with 11 points.

Torque leave it late to go second

Elsewhere, Torque moved up to second after they scored a dramatic 96th minute winner to beat ten-man Rentistas 2-1.

The match

Matias Coccaro finished off Franco Pizzichillo’s pull-back to put Torque in front in the 15th minute before Gonzalo Vega equalised nine minutes later.

Coccaro blasted a penalty over the bar in the second half as the visitors wasted a chance to go in front. With Rentistas down to ten as Damian Malrechauffe was sent off, Torque pushed for a winner.

In stoppage time, Yonattthan Rak curled a shot into the bottom corner from distance to spark raucous scenes from the Torque players.

What it means

Torque are up to second, and just three points behind Liverpool. Rentistas are second bottom with just one win. Torque host bottom side Cerro Largo on Monday.
