Freiburg II go top

Back-to-back 3-1 away wins for SC Freiburg II has taken them to the top of the Regionalliga Südwest division after TSV Steinbach conceded a stoppage time equaliser.

Freiburg beat Aalen 3-1 to win their fourth game from their last six and leapfrog the previous leaders.

The match

Noah Weisshaupt gave the visitors the lead in the 24th minute, finishing off the rebound after his shot was saved. Nishan Burkart scored his 11th goal in just eight league matches with an excellent glancing header.

Guillaume Furrer was also on target in the second half as Christian Preusser’s and Uwe Staib’s side won their ninth away game of the season.

What it means

Freiburg now lead the table with 44 points from 21 games, a lead of a point with a game in hand. Aalen are 15th and have lost their past two games. They lie just a point above the drop zone.

Steinbach drop points again

TSV Steinbach followed up their defeat against Stuttgart II last week with another frustrating result, drawing 1-1 against Mainz II.

They looked to have done enough to win the game when Soren Eismann reacted quickest to a loose ball and poked a shot past the keeper.

However, Mainz II piled on the pressure and won a penalty in stoppage time. Paul Nebel stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

What it means

TSV Steinbach’s return of one point from their last six has seen them drop to second. Mainz remain 11th and five points above the relegation places
