Sheffield United cause big upset
Manchester United’s title ambitions were dented as they fell to an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to bottom side Sheffield United at Old Trafford.
The Blades had only won one game this season out of 19 but deserved their victory with the hosts lacking urgency and a spark for the majority of the game.
The match
Kean Bryan leapt above David De Gea to score his first goal for Sheffield United in the 23rd minute with a header that bounced off the post following John Fleck’s corner.
Man United thought they had equalised soon after with a similar goal but it was a ruled out for a Harry Maguire foul on Aaron Ramsale.
Mason Greenwood scuffed a shot wide at the beginning of the second half as United attempted another comeback.
Maguire did score in the 64th minute to bring the hosts level against his former club with a thumping header from an Alex Telles corner. It was Maguire’s first goal in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
However, with 16 minutes remaining, United failed to clear and substitute Oliver Burke found some space in the box. His shot shot struck Axel Tuanzebe and bounced off the bar and into the goal to give Chris Wilder’s side a historic win at Old Trafford.
What it means
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side missed the chance to go top of the league with a win and are now a point behind Man City, who have a game in hand. Sheffield United won only their second match of the season, but they remain bottom and 10 points from safety.
Stats
It was Sheffield United’s first win against Man United since the opening day of the Premier League in 1992.
United were beaten for the first time in 13 games since they lost to Arsenal. It was their their fourth defeat at home this season in the Premier League.
Bruno Fernandes has now gone four straight league games without a goal or an assist.
Since the start of last season, no Premier League side has conceded more league goals from corners than Manchester United (14) (level with Brighton and Chelsea).
