Ings strikes to beat Liverpool
Danny Ings scored against his former club as Southampton made a great start to the new year with a 1-0 win against Liverpool.

The defeat was Liverpool’s second of the season and means they have won just four of their last 15 league away matches, and only two of nine this season. They remain top of the league on goal difference.
The win was Southampton’s first in five league games.
The match
Liverpool had just one shot on target against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men, who took the lead in the second minute.
James Ward-Prowse chipped a free kick into the path of Ings, who exquisitely lobbed the ball over Alisson and into the net.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have drawn a blank in their last two games, after drawing 0-0 against Newcastle in their previous match. Liverpool have failed to score in 258 minutes of league action. They have taken just two points from their last three games.
The Reds won 16 of their first 17 games last season in their best ever start to a season.They have taken 16 fewer points at the same stage this season.
Manchester United can leapfrog Liverpool into top spot if they win their game in hand against Burnley. Manchester City can also go above the champions if they win both their matches.
Southampton are up to sixth in the table and are only four points off the top.
