Draw at the Etihad

There was a stalemate at the Etihad between the last three title winners as Manchester City drew 1-1 with Liverpool at the Etihad.

Jurgen Klopp started with a front four of Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah and Salah’s penalty in the 13th minute put Liverpool ahead after Kyle Walker brought down Mane in the box.

However, City equalised just after the half-hour mark when Gabriel Jesus turned away from Trent Alexander-Arnold and finished past Ederson.

Guardiola’s side had the chance to go ahead before half-time when they were given a penalty for a controversial Joe Gomez handball, but Kevin De Bruyne rolled his penalty wide.

De Bruyne penalty miss

It was the first penalty to miss the target in a Premier League game since October 2018 when Riyad Mahrez blazed over the bar for City against Liverpool.

The second-half was cautious with both teams desperate not to lose against their rivals before the international break.

Stats from the game

Liverpool could’ve gone back to the top with a win but had to settle for a draw that leaves them in third – a point behind Leicester City in top spot.

The Merseyside club have dropped seven points in the league this season – it took them 30 games to drop as many points last season.

Liverpool have only won three of their past 10 away games in the league, after winning 16 of their previous 17.

Man City are 10th and have 12 points from seven games, their fewest amount of points at this stage of a league season since 2008/09. They are, however, only five points behind their rivals with a game in hand.
